Decision to Keep Open Charter Public Schools Serving More than 13,000 Louisiana Children Rests with Louisiana Supreme CourtBATON ROUGE, La. – PublicSchoolOptions.org (PSO), a parent-led advocacy group, recently conducted a data analysis project to determine the educational fate of Louisiana’s Type 2 charter public school students, whose education is under threat by a frivolous lawsuit brought by the Louisiana teachers union and Iberville Parish School Board. The union aims to remove the funding mechanism to Type 2 charter public schools, which would likely force the schools to close that educate more than 13,000 Louisiana students. The data was outlined in an amicus brief filed by PSO and Louisiana parents earlier this month.Throughout the court proceedings, PSO has voiced concerns that many of these Type 2 charter public school students would be sent back to a local school that has already failed to meet their learning needs. Now, according to analysis of publically-available data from the district schools within a five-mile radius of the Type 2 charter public schools found that, on average, 75 percent of students would be forced to return to a school that performs lower than the Type 2 school they currently attend.DATA ANALYSIS
To view the full analysis see pages 20-26.In 2015, a District Court judge ruled in favor of Louisiana parents and students with a clear message: charter schools are public schools and the current funding mechanism established by the state can continue. In spite of the judge’s decision, the teachers union and Iberville Parish School Board pushed forward with an appeal in their continued fight to diminish options in public education. The appeals court sided with the teachers union and Iberville Parish School Board and the case is now at the Supreme Court for finality.
